Moses was not satisfied

Image
Moses is still not satisfied.  Even with God's promises and recent gifts, he remains unsatisfied. Moses has been on the mountain for 40 days and nights, communing with God.  He has already had that experience; he has already had the experiences that are recorded in this chapter, where God, we are told, ‘spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend’—a most unusual thing. In response to Moses' request for assurance and satisfaction, God says, ‘I will even grant you that,’ and immediately provides him with some degree of it.  And yet Moses goes further. He is not satisfied. He does not stop; he goes on, and he says, ‘Show me your glory.’ This attitude is what we may very well describe as the daring quality that always comes into great faith. You will find other illustrations of this attribute elsewhere in the Scriptures.  But here is perhaps the most remarkable of all: Moses's audacity in asking for more after already receiving such answers.  G...

I want to pursue God more

Image
By John Piper Our theme for the week of prayer has been, "Going Hard After the Holy God.". Today we focus on "going hard." The phrase is adapted from A.W. Tozer, whose little book, The Pursuit of God, has a chapter entitled, "Following Hard after God." Tozer wrote this book in 1948, but if anything, it is more relevant today.  After showing how Moses and David and Paul and all the great hymn writers were even thirsting after more of God, Tozer writes; “How tragic that we in this dark day have had our seeking done for us by our teachers. Everything is made to centre upon the initial act of 'accepting' Christ . . . and we are not expected thereafter to crave any further revelation of God to our souls. We have been snared in the coils of a spurious logic which insists that if we have found Him, we need no more seek Him. This is set before us as the last word in orthodoxy, and it is taken for granted that no Bible-taught Christian ever believed otherwi...

Is your soul starved?

Illustrates Jesus' description of himself "I am the Good Shepherd" (from the Gospel of John, chapter 10, verse 11). This version of the image shows the detail of his face. The memorial window is also captioned: "To the Glory of God and in Loving Memory of William Wright. Died 6th November, 1932. Aged 70 Yrs." (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) “For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” John 6:33 My friend recently completed schooling to become a nutritional therapist. As I describe to her how my body is feeling, she grows concerned. “Your cells are starved,” she alerts me. Not only am I not taking in the right nutrition, she says, but the nutrients I am getting aren’t properly being accessed and used at the most basic level in my body. Is your soul starved? As I rethink my physical health and identify wh...
