When I take my foot off the spiritual pedal I will coast

Image
English: Austin J40 toy car, interior (Photo credit: Wikipedia ) When I take my foot off the pedal, the car does not speed up. It doesn’t even maintain the same speed. Instead, from the very moment I take my foot off the accelerator, the car begins to slow. Allowing the car to coast is inviting the car to stop. It may take some time, but left on its own, it will stop eventually. It is inevitable. I’ve been thinking about this lately because I see in my own life a tendency to coast—to coast in my relationships, to coast in my pursuit of godliness , to coast in my pursuit of God himself. And here are some things I’ve observed: I do not coast toward godliness, but selfishness. I do not coast toward self-control, but rashness. I do not coast toward a love for others, but agitation. I do not coast toward patience, but irritability. I do not coast toward purity, but lust. I do not coast toward self-denial, but self-obsession. I do not coast toward the gospel, but self-sufficie

John MacArthur wanrs to divide the body of Christ

Image
When I became a Christian at the age of twelve, it was through the faithful ministry of an independent, fundamentalist Baptist Church that was part of the IFCA ( Independent Fundamental Churches of America ), an organization that John MacArthur was once closely affiliated with. During my years as a fundamentalist, I learned a lot from the ministry of John MacArthur and his colleagues. No one can deny the positive impact that MacArthur and his ministry  Grace to You  have had on the body of Christ . No one can ignore the gifts that MacArthur has given to Christians worldwide through his books, radio ministry, and Study Bibles. John MacArthur is a deeply committed follower of Jesus Christ and a man of great conviction and boldness- something that is truly lacking in much of the Church today. However, all of MacArthur’s gifts and the positive impact of his ministry do not give him a “free pass” when he, as a high-profile minister of the Gospel, steps very publicly out of line and b

Spiritual Healing in the Midst of a Husband's Addiction to Pornography

Image
By Tim Challies . A short time ago, while posting a poem titled “ I Looked for Love in Your Eyes ,” I lamented that while there are many, many books written to help men overcome an addiction to pornography , there is very little written to help the women who have been victims of a husband ’s addiction. Shortly after I received an email from Vicki Tiede who has written just such a title. Her book, titled  Mosaic Heart: Spiritual Healing in the Midst of a Husband’s Addiction to Pornography  (working title - this will likely change) will be published by New Growth Press, probably about a year from now. I asked Vicki if, in the meanwhile, she’d be willing to do an interview to offer some words of help to women who are struggling with the effects of their husband’s sin. She was kind enough to do so. Here is what I asked her: What is the scope of this problem? How many women are struggling with the effects of a husband’s addiction to pornography? For nearly every man who regularly views po
